On Saturday, April 14, Rhizome hosted their 3rd annual Seven on Seven conference at the New Museum in New York City. Each year Rhizome pairs seven leading artists with seven technologists in teams of two, and challenges them to develop something new — be it an application, social media, artwork, product, or whatever they imagine — over the course of a single day.

The New York Times describes Seven on Seven as a:

“contemporary-art-meets-technology cage match, except that there is no cage and the artists and ‘technologists’ who go head to head over the course of a day emerge generally unscathed but for some sleep loss. If everything clicks, they might also emerge with a great idea for the digital world or the world of art, or both.”

This year’s participating technologists included Jeremy Ashkenas, Blaine Cook, Michael Herf, Marissa Mayer, Aaron Swartz, Khoi Vinh and Anthony Volodkin. The artists were Aram Bartholl, Xavier Cha, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Naeem Mohaiemen, Jon Rafman, Taryn Simon and Stephanie Syjuco.

Presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, The Webby Awards has been called the “Internet’s highest honor” by the New York Times and is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet.

Established in 1996, the 16th Annual Webby Awards received nearly 10,000 entries from all 50 states and over 60 countries worldwide.  Winners will be announced on May 1st and all nominees will be honored at a ceremony hosted by comedian Patton Oswalt on May 21st in New York City.

Colossal is being honored alongside some other great art sites like Walker Art Center‘s ambitious new museum site and the immense Google Art Project.
