Earlier this month Vandalog founder RJ Rushmore published the list, “The 50 Greatest Street Artists Right Now” in Complex Magazine. As an authority on the subject, RJ offered up his opinion of the fifty top street artists working today.
RJ’s list comprised of artists from over fifteen different countries including Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia and South Africa. The top five consisted of Os Gemeos of Brazil, JR of France, Banksy of the U.K., Jaz of Argentina and his number one choice Gaia of the U.S.A.
The list sparked strong reactions and spirited dialogue for RJ via twitter and Vandalog. When questioned by Robin Grearson about only including two women in the list of fifty RJ invited her to write a post for Vandalog as a companion piece to his original list. Grearson’s list “Artists who are also women” mentioned twenty-six women street artists creating today.
In response to the active dialogue, RJ was invited to participate in a panel discussing gender in street art and to host an evening of short films at the Living Walls Conference, a conference on street art and urbanism that takes place in Atlanta, Georgia annually.
